CHARACTER TRAITS
Talents & Abilities: Speaks old-Earth languages: Japanese, English, and Filipino. Also speaks Federation Standard, Klingon, Vulcan.

Unlike a pure Betazoid, she is only slightly telepathic. Where other Betazoids are able to carry on mental conversations using mental words, Danen sees the thought images of others combined with a sensation of the person’s emotions in regard to the image. This leaves her with the need to “read between the lines” and to determine the true content. Her empathic sense is strong, however.

Physically, she bears few of the hallmark signs of being Klingon. Her forehead ridges are not as prominent, and she is not visibly as muscular, though she has the strength of an average Klingon woman.

She has a knack for creating holodeck programs. She also has artistic abilities in painting and wood-carving.
Strengths: Empathic and telepathic abilities; strong respect for superior officers; and concern for her fellow crewmates.
Limitations: Danen is extremely introverted. She sometimes performs a mental assessment of people before getting to know them.
Likes: She enjoys spending time with her daughter and with her closest peers. She prefers honest people who display respect for others. She likes holodeck wrestling and boxing.
Dislikes: She dislikes people who discriminate against others because of racial or social differences, and those who are dishonest.
Ambitions: She wants to see her daughter grow up to be a happy, positive young lady who is free of worries and problems. For herself, she wants to be able to close her eyes and sleep without her past haunting her.
Quirks: Danen does not “act” Klingon. She is not moody or boisterous. She abhors violence and attempts to avoid conflicts. She displays more Betazoid characteristics.
Interests: Linguistics, arts, learning new things, holodeck programs.

PERSONAL HISTORY

—– THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS —–

Danen K’agi Lrunin was born in 2356, the only child of Klingon Captain Karrek, and Betazoid Denun Lrunin, an ambassadorial assistant in the Federation Diplomatic Corps.

When the Federation decided to send an ambassador to the Klingon homeworld, Denun and co-worker, Aiko Yamaguchi, were sent along as assistants. Before arriving at Q’onos, their transport was attacked. Most of the passengers and crew died before the Klingon Imperial Fleet could respond to their distress call. Captain Karrek and his crew escorted them the rest of the way to Q’onos.

Upon their arrival, the diplomatic envoy met further resistance by the Klingons who did not favor an alliance with the Federation. Because of the threat to the Ambassador and party, Captain Karrek was assigned to guard the Federation representatives. In spite of his feelings about this “babysitting duty,” Captain Karrek agreed. Over time, he found Denun to be a woman of “strong character” and worthy of a Klingon’s respect. He continued to provide for the diplomatic team’s security after the High Council agreed to allow a Federation embassy on Q’onos.

Several months passed while Denun and Aiko assisted the Ambassador in solidifying Federation-Klingon peace ties. During those months, it became apparent that the Klingon-Federation relationship was not the only ties being strengthened. Denun and Karrek’s bond was also growing.

Karrek himself was a Klingon mongrel: a half-Klingon, half-Betazoid hybrid. He was Vorak’s son by his second wife, a Betazoid woman, Lejah Boxun, who only lived to see her son grow to his early teens. Never-the-less, he had risen to a position of leadership in their house because of his wisdom and character, much to the dismay of his Uncle and counsins. So when Karrek and Denun announced their intent to marry, Karrek’s Uncle Rot’n refused to accept “the further thinning” of their noble bloodlines. He insisted that leadership of the house be turned over to him and his family. However, Vorak refused to reject his son or his son’s choice of wife. The resulting dispute ultimately lead to the sundering of the elder brothers (Vorak and Rot’n) who ran the house.

More months passed, and Denun bore Karrek a daughter. Mixed blood, or not, Danen K’agi never lacked for love from her parents, or from her grandfather Vorak.

As more time passed, Denun continued her work toward furthering Federation-Klingon relations on Q’onos. Upon Vorak’s death, Karrek retired from the fleet, but continued to serve the empire by replacing his father as a member of the High Council and leader of his house.

—– THE AGREEMENT —–

From the time that Karrek assumed his Father’s position in the High Council, Denun felt a dreadful foreboding for her husband. She confided this fear to Aiko Yamaguchi, still her best friend and colleague.

“Aiko, the house of Vorak is in a state of unrest because Karrek is the leader and holds the house’s power in the High Council. I have a bad feeling about this. In the event that something should happen to me and Karrek, you must take my daughter away from this place and raise her as your own back in Earth. I know this might be a burden on you and I might never repay you on this, but you must do this for me and for your goddaughter. Please, allow her to choose her own path on what part of her heritage she wishes to develop, may it be Betazoid or Klingon or even Human. Help her overcome her fears and make her strong just like her father.”

“But why? This is where her family is…?”

“Because unlike Karrek and his father, this place does not welcome hybrids like Danen…”

—– THE TRAGEDY —–

One night after an especially heated power struggle with his nephew, Rot’n realized that Karrek’s hold on the High Council was too great for him to disrupt. Rot’n decided to end the “weakened and thinned” branch of the bloodlines once and for all. Gathering the supportive members of the family to his side, he stormed Karrek’s house and demanded that Karrek hand over his position as house leader and his seat on the Council. Karrek refused, knowing the only possible outcome would be death for himself and his household. His only consolation was that his wife, with incredible foresight, had sent Danen to stay with Aiko that night. Danen was not in the house.

At Aiko Yamaguchi’s home, seven-year-old Danen was inconsolable that night. She would wake, screaming and calling out pleadingly for her mother and father. Aiko tried to reach Denun and Karrek but with no response. At last, when the child fell into a catatonic shock-like state, Aiko called for a physician. Aiko finally understood what had happened to Danen when she heard that Karrek and Denun were dead.

—– CLAN OUTCAST —–

Several days passed before Danen was able to physically recover after her parents’ deaths. By the time Danen was physically well again, Aiko knew the child had changed, but she did not know the full extent of the change until later. Danen was able to relate to Aiko the exact events at Karrek and Denun’s murder as if Danen had been there. She had only to close her eyes to view the scene as if in a never-ending nightmare.

The death investigation came to a quick close, a disturbing fact for both Aiko and Danen. Aiko wanted answers, and she knew she would have to get them for herself. To do so, she had to speak to the new head of the house of Vorak, Rot’n. What she learned from him then disturbed her even more than the murders, if that was possible. She decided then and there to take action on Denun’s wishes that Danen be returned to Earth.

“You spoke to Rot’n, Yamaguchi-san?” Danen asked Yamaguchi, as the latter entered through the door.

“I, uh, yes, Danen. I did.”

“He told you he didn’t want me, didn’t he?…That the entire clan didn’t want me because I’m weak and pathetic. That if I weren’t weak, I would’ve died defending my family. That any real Klingon child would’ve done that…”

Yamaguchi looked at Danen, confused. “How?… How did you know that?”

“I saw it in your mind… I saw everything in your mind…”

—– STARTING ANEW AND GROWING PAINS —–

Aiko Yamaguchi resigned from the Federation Diplomatic Corps returned to her hometown in Sendai, Japan. There she raised Danen like her own, worrying constantly about the child’s emotional state.

Despite the change of environment, Danen was still haunted by her parents’ death. Aiko worried further because Danen refused to socialize with other children around her. She was a loner who preferred to stay inside the house in her free time, engaging in activities that would require little or no contact with other people.

Danen did the same thing in school. She always took the seat in the far end of the room. She was always quiet. And, as much as possible, she refused to interact with other children.

Yamaguchi grew increasingly concerned by the child’s continued withdrawal since starting school on Earth.

“What’s wrong, Danen? Why won’t you go outside and play with the other children? Why won’t you want to go to school?”

“Too noisy… Too many people talking all at once… Too confusing…” was Danen’s only answer.

—– PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT —–

Years passed. Danen grew to a beautiful, intelligent young woman. She was still extremely shy and barely socialized with other people. Despite Yamaguchi’s insistence that Danen go out and meet people, the girl would merely shake her head and retreat to the sanctuary of her rooms…to read a book, to paint or to wood carve.

Despite growing up in the loving care of her godmother, Danen feared rejection more than ever. Since that day Yamaguchi had spoken to Rot’n, the rejection of her own kin sank deeper and deeper into her heart. She always read Yamaguchi’s affections for her as being genuine, and for that she was thankful. But not all people were like her godmother, and some would not be very accommodating for her “differences”. Rather than encounter another rejection, Danen would choose to avoid people. She went through elementary, junior high school and then eventually high school managing to remain unnoticed. She became more and more of a watchful phantom among the people around her. Apart from her forehead ridges, no one really paid attention to her. For that she was thankful. Or was she?

After years of practice, she was also able to screen out the unnecessary thoughts and mental images that she read through other people’s mental projections. She was also able to learn a way of sifting through these things and taking out what she only needed.

—– STARFLEET ACADEMY —–

Danen joined the Academy with encouragement from Yamaguchi. However, she still felt uncomfortable with the idea of being with people. So instead of taking up Engineering or Operations as what Yamaguchi suggested, she decided to major in Starship Navigation and Helm control. And she was right. She loved piloting. She loved the idea that she didn’t need to interact a lot with other people while she was on the Helm.

She also took up a minor in Starship computers. She decided that since she had too much time in her hands, she’d have to do something interesting and fruitful. She decided to venture into studying the fundamentals involving holodecks and holotechnology. With them, she was able to create a lot of holoprograms, even her own exercise regimen in boxing and wrestling was done in the holodeck.

Although Danen’s personality isolated her from the crowds of students in the Academy, her instructors found her to be quite efficient and had the makings of a good officer in her, if only she would just get out of her shell every once and a while.

After more or less four years in the Academy, she graduated at the top ten of her class with a major in Starship Navigation and Helm control, and minors in Starship Computer technology and holotechnology.

—– GETTING NOTICED —–

Danen’s first assignment after the Academy was on the USS Wallace, where she was the Assistant Helm officer, and Assistant to the Chief Shuttle Pilot. Everything seemed to go smoothly. She went through her daily chores with such routine precision that she could even do it with her eyes closed.

She met her future fiancé, Lieutenant Quinn Jacobs, in the Wallace’s Ten Forward. Danen had run out of replicator rations and was forced to go to the Mess Hall for dinner. It was a full house that night, and most of the tables were already taken. Danen felt herself lucky to find a seat in a secluded corner of the room where she silently ate her dinner. That is, until someone decided to join her.

“Um, Ensign, is this seat taken?”

“No, sir. But…”

“But what?”

“Um, nothing. Please sit. Make yourself comfortable.”

The Lieutenant sat down. Moments passed in silence and Quinn found it uncomfortable.

“You don’t talk much do you?”

Silence.

“Look, I don’t know about you but I find sharing a table with someone without even small talk exchanged between those people… It’s mighty strange from where I come from. Now let me introduce myself. My name is Quinn Jacobs. I’m Assistant Chief Security officer. You?”

“I, err, Danen Lrunin…”

“Now that wasn’t so hard, now was it?”

“No.”

“You like one-liners don’t you? Or are you just like this?”

“Like what?”

“So enigmatic and quiet.”

“It’s good to be that way… Keeps people away…”

“Really?” Quinn retorts. “That’s something new. Usually people come here to socialize with the other crew. You didn’t happen to come here for that now did you?”

She looked up from her food, and merely shook her head. “I ran out of replicator rations.”

“That’s a first!”

—– REINVENTING A NEW DANEN —–

It was soon obvious that Quinn had set his eye on her…and vice versa. After that day in Ten Forward, Quinn regularly invited her out, getting to know her even better. She learned that they more or less shared the same passion for arts, and similar interests. As the days passed, they knew they were falling for each other.

During this time, Danen became more open in her relationships with people. She became a little more outgoing, and a little less of a loner. Quinn was the source of her strength, and with his support she could do or face anything. She was her muse. Quinn was her life.

—– THE MISSION, FIRST AND LAST MISHAP —–

It was a routine planetary survey. Danen was assigned to pilot the shuttle that would ferry the away team to and from the planet they were surveying. Initial scans of the planet failed to reveal inhabitants because of the planet’s core composition. However, immediately upon landing on the surface, the away team was captured by the inhabitants. Danen was forced to attempt a rescue and was also captured.

The inhabitants called themselves “Lurkers,” and did not like trespassers. They were highly telepathic, with mental prowess far beyond Danen’s. After several days of captivity, during which time the Wallace could not get a fix on them, Quinn devised a plan for their escape.

“Alright, Danen, here’s the plan. As soon as you get yourself and the others in the shuttle, fire your phasers on the power generators in this complex! That will lower the shields for this area. You must back in the ship and let the Captain know what happened…”

With clarity, she could see his plan included sacrificing himself. “But what about you? I can’t leave you here!”

“I’ll try to catch up, but I have to keep them busy while you and the others get to the shuttle…”

“You’re crazy! You’re going to get yourself killed!”

“Danen, listen to me! I love you and I don’t want anything to happen to you or anyone else in this away team! If I don’t make it to the shuttle within five minutes of when you arrive there, then start firing and get out of here….”

“But Quinn–”

“No buts, Ensign! I’m giving you a direct order and I expect you to follow them!”

He out ranked her. And other lives were also at stake. She knew she had no choice!

—– THE DECISION —–

The days since Quinn’s death had weighed on Danen heavily. She felt more lost than she had before. It was as if her life’s compass was gone. She knew she needed to reach out, but it was harder than ever before.

“Julie, hello, how are you doing?”

“What do you care!? Why should you care?!? You killed my brother!”

“I didn’t kill your brother. You know that.”

“Really? I don’t believe you! Don’t you know that he would’ve have lived if only you hadn’t fired on that power generator? The Wallace would have been able to get them with the information you had! But no, you had to fire on those damned generators and blow the whole place up! You killed my brother on purpose. You like seeing people getting killed on your behalf don’t you? First your parents, now my brother…”

Danen could feel the pain Quinn’s sister was venting. Surely she could not believe these things were true! “Julie, his death hurt me too…”

“No it didn’t. You should have been the one who died there, not him!”

Danen hung her head, her own fragile self-worth shaken in the wake of Julie’s accusations. Caving in to her own feelings of failure and loss, Danen told herself Julie was right. She knew that she couldn’t change the past, even if she did apologize.

“Julie, I know apologizing won’t bring your brother back. If it’s any consolation to you, I will resign my commission, and will do my best never to cross paths with you again.”

—– LOVE LOST, LOVE GAINED —–

Danen returned to her godmother’s home in Japan after she handed in her resignation from Starfleet. A short time later, she found a job piloting the university shuttle at Tokyo University.

After her first week on the job, she came home from work feeling very light-headed.

“Tadaima, Yamaguchi-san…”

“Okaerinasai, Danen.” Concern etched the older woman’s face as she stared at Danen’s face. “Daijobu? Byoki ga aru? (Are you alright? Are you sick?)”

Danen nodded as she sat down on the nearest seat. “Sukoshi kimochi ga warui…(I don’t feel so good…)”

“Alright then. Stay there. I’ll go and call Dr. Yamada…” Danen merely nodded.

After Dr. Yamada ran the tricorder scan on her, he began to smile.

“She’s not sick, Yamaguchi-san. Danen-chan here is pregnant. The tricorder scan showed that the baby is now one month old…”

PERSONALITY

Danen is an introvert and is extremely shy and quiet due to her personal history. She’s extremely sensitive but keeps everything to herself. In truth, she keeps all her emotions to herself, even the most negative ones. She has this feeling of concern and care for everyone around her, especially those who are too young, sick or needy. She is naive when it comes to relationships and has a very hard time expressing personal feelings which she wishes to convey to other people.

The only time she talks much is on a very eventful duty shift or away mission, where she is required to report or talk to her fellow officers every now and then. However, on her personal time, she prefers to spend it in the quiet of her quarters with her daughter or in the holodeck relaxing in the holoprogram she made of her guardian Aiko Yamaguchi’s house in Japan.

Another aspect of her personality is that, being three-quarters Betazoid, Danen can easily read or feel what one thinks or feels. This is the reason why she shies away from relationships or people who try to befriend her because it is hard for her to control her empathic abilities and not know what the person truly feels or thinks. This is also the reason she refuses to let anyone know she is part Betazoid. Unlike other Betazoids or part-Betazoids for that matter, her empathic and telepathic abilities were “switched on” earlier than usual (at a younger age), on that night her parents were murdered. During her recovery, it was hard for her to sleep, or think for that matter, because her mind was already crowded with all the emotions and thoughts being projected by everyone around her. This was also the reason why she preferred to be in alone because it was the only time she could ever get some peace and quiet in her own head.

On her last conversation with her deceased fiancé, Quinn Jacobs, just before their ill-fated away mission, she said, “I can’t stop this! No matter how I try! This is not some switch I can just turn on or off whenever I want to, Quinn. This is a part of me! The only way these empathic impulses will cease is on the day I will die…”
